Top Circulated Books of February

I'm back with round two of the "Fine Nine" for the month of February. Each month I'm sharing the top circulated books that our kids are checking out, along with the question many of us ask when it comes to kids... "Why?"

This month the I Survived series swept the board with four out of nine of the top circulated spots. Like I said last time, these books will be on this list until the cows come home... or as long as there are new releases. Another thing I notice with all of these titles is that they are ones that we have multiple copies of on the shelves. One thing I will consider next year is getting more copies of books for those that consistantly have "holds."

Here's the breakdown of the books you see above, in order of most circulated:

1. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School - Moving up from #3 on the chart... another of the most popular series in the library. As the newest book in the series this one is going to be on the "countdown" for a while.

2. White Fur Flying by Patricia MacLachlan - This one also moved up the list quite a bit, from #6. We are diligently reading William Allen White books so that our students are able to vote on the best books of the year come mid-April. It's one of the lower level books on the list for third grade. This one is a quick and enjoyable read about a family that fosters Great Pyrenees dogs and how those dogs change the lives of their grumpy neighbors.

3. I Survived: The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 by Lauren Tarshis - enough said.

4. Words with Wings by Nikki Grimes - Another William Allen White that's a go-to for kids looking for a quick read. This one is mid-fourth grade level and also worth one point on AR so many 5th graders have chosen this one. It's about a young girl day dreaming, the teacher getting after her, only to find out that daydreaming is okay in the end.

5. I Survived: The Shark Attacks of 1916 by Lauren Tarshis - enough said.

6. Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt - Oh, Scaredy Squirrel. My first graders can't get enough of him... ever! There infatuation started back at the beginning of the year when we shared a fiction and non-fiction comparison video from Book Flix featuring Scaredy Squirrel. I have to agree, the little guy is hilarious. He's anxious, paranoid, and downright funny. I recently ordered three more we didn't have and I will be looking to get a second set of each book next year to keep up with the kids still fighting each other for a little Scaredy Squirrel in their lives.

7. The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss - Seeing this on the chart made me giggle a little bit. Sure, it's Dr. Seuss week and last week I started to see more of his books being checked out. But I think this particular book was checked out so often for a whole other reason. First, we have five copies so it has that going for it. But, it's mostly because my adorable Kinders choose their own books from the shelves now and they think it's fun to get the same books as their friends. Ha! Whatever gets them reading, right?

8. I Surived: The Joplin Tornado, 2011 by Lauren Tarshis - enough said.

9. I Survived: The Attacks of September 11, 2001 by Lauren Tarshis - enough said.

Seeing some of the same books on this list makes me excited that kids are recommending them to each other or look forward to a new addition to a series... but it also challenges me to get new books circulated through the different interest groups. What have your kids been reading lately?

Back to the books,

Audra
