I shared this story with my Kinders today. They loved hearing me speak in a thick Spanish accent playing the role of El Raton Perez and the high squeeky voice of the Tooth Fairy too. On top of the usual reading and library standards for their grade level, I enjoyed teaching them about the language and culture of many Hispanic families. Before this story I didn't know that other countries had different traditions for lost teeth. But sure enough, just like Santa Claus, many cultures have their own version of the Tooth Fairy. In this great picture book the Tooth Fairy and El Raton Perez end up at the same house for the same lost tooth! You'll have to read the rest to figure out how they solve their problem. ;)
As with anything we do, application is key. I created the activity below for our youngest readers to simply work through the similarities and differences of the two characters with a little cutting and pasting. Head over to my TpT to get your own copy!
A little conversation goes a long way with these young readers.
For example: How do they know there is a new lost tooth? One uses the moon, the other uses the stars. What do they carry with them? One uses a wand, the other a lasso. I easily extended this activity with the Kinders showing me their proof (or textual evidence, if you will) by showing me what page in the story helped them make that decision.
This activity was a lot of fun, but the story truly made it enjoyable and has inspired me to create some other activities to go with it in the future. Please let me know when you read this book!
