It's Monday! What are you reading?: 03.28.16

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now… who knows, you might discover that next “must read” book! Our Kid Lit to YA version is hosted by Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers.

Spring Break is over and it's back to the books... children's books that is. I didn't get finished with all of the ones I was hoping to, so I have a handful of roll-over reads and audio book listens:

As always, I have books to add to my reading list for this week. I had some kids choose from a couple series that many of them have been reading all year long. The Village that Almost Vanished by Steve Brezenoff is one of the Field Trip Mysteries books. We have five books from this series and my third graders love them and are great for their current levels. I will be ordering the rest of the books in this series in the fall, but I am excited to see what all the hype is by reading this one now.

Another series that my third and fourth graders are into is the Who Was...? biographies. There are so many of them! I had a couple of the guys pick out one for me to dig into this week. Fittingly enough, they picked out Who Was Roald Dahl? by True Kelly. I'm intrigued by the style of these books and flipping through the pages, it looks like Mr. Dahl has some interesting stories of his own.

The other book joining in the party this week is Hello, I'm Johnny Cash by G. Neri. I picked this one up because it is on the award list for next year. From first glance, I can tell that it is a biography and written in poetry format. I have had one student pick it up this year on her own and she truly loved it. I'm hoping I feel the same way about it too.

In terms of adult books, I'm still reading Fatal Grace by Louise Penny. I'm hoping to also start tackling one from my #MMDchallenge, as well.

Over Spring Break I did finish a couple very good books.

Neighborhood Sharks by Katherine Roy is an award-winning nonfiction book that will be shared a lot next school year. I know this will really appeal to all my kids that are infatuated with shark books! I loved the illustrations and the information about the sharks different "weapons." I learned a lot from this nonfiction read meant for kids! Stay tuned for a more thorough review later on this summer.

I also finished the almost 500 page book written by Kate Morton, The Lake House! As I said last time, the back and forth between the past and more modern day really kept me intrigued, however I could understand how some people said they got lost in the time changes. I made many guesses along the way about what really happened to the young boy who disappeared many years ago, but the book surprised me in the end with the answers and the connections between the characters... so for that I give it five great big stars! (I hate being able to guess the ending 100 pages before I get there.)

Now you tell me, what are you reading?

Back to the books,
